The bushfires on Black Saturday were spread throughout the state but the biggest fires which caused the most deaths are shown below on the map
A total of 173 people died in the bushfires on Black Saturday. More died later in hospitals and other places because of fatal burn and extreme smoke inhalation and loss of oxygen. 2,000 houses were destroyed around the state leaving behind nothing but blackened ruins while some houses stood standing, out of pure luck.
